The porcupine and the hedgehog are actually the same animal, "porcupine" being the West coast term, and "hedgehog" being the name on the East coast. The well known physical differences between hedgehogs and porcupines are caused by climate, not genetic diversity.

Totally false. Just like everything else on this site. Hedgehogs are physically smaller, and have smaller quills.
yes, and porcupines quills will come out when they poke someone, while hedgehogs quills remain attached.
Environmental adaptations - same as sheep that don't molt in colder climates, goldfish that are smaller in small aquariums, etc.
